Inspired Interiors: 5 Must-Do Design TipsMarch 23, 2017
Start with what you love and add on
No matter where I am, once people find out I do interior design I usually get one of three responses. One, they melt with insecurity if I’m in their home thinking I’ve been observing their tastes silently (which never happens). Two, they light up and want instant free advice on their ideas. Three, they say, “Oh my gosh! You should be on HGTV!”
No matter the response I do enjoy validating people’s ideas, and giving design advice. So, in an effort to celebrate my love for design (and clearly our country’s fascination and love for home improvement and renovation), here are five must-do design tips.

1. Start with love
Find an image, furniture piece, or accessory you LOVE and start there. Use that as your inspiration.
2. Paint to coordinate
Coordinate the paint to go with that staple piece. Paint makes a huge wow for little investment. Refresh your trim paints in a bright or creamy neutral and it’ll make a huge impact.
Magazines like Better Homes & Gardens create neutral palettes to emulate.
3. Light it up
Lamps and hanging fixtures are a great way to update a space giving it a new sense of style.
4. Go big or go home
Don’t buy small and trinket-y items. Invest in large items and accessories using fewer if need be. This is a big impact; a ‘less is more’ concept.
5. Patterns, baby
Use a variety of patterns and textures to give your space a designer look. You can look at my previous blog posts on how to best select fabrics.
I know this should probably be the first step and definitely a must-do, but every project should start with a budget! You have no idea how quickly projects creep into your wallet and take over if you’re not careful. I want you to be happy with your design and enjoy it without the guilt knowing you overspent. When it comes to design tips there are definitely some dos and don’ts. Start with these five musts and I think you’ll find your space looking a bit more designer. If these must-dos overwhelm you, then your must-do is to hire a designer.
