Inspired Interiors: Simplify for a Sensational Year at HomeJanuary 26, 2017
Simplify. Reduce. Create.
It’s the beginning of what will I hope will be a great year for all of us. I know we’ll face some unexpected challenges, but I’m realizing as I mature that despite the obstacles each year offers great opportunities that are making me a better version of me. As part of my 2017 focus, I am intentionally going to simplify. Here’s why it’s important in your home and how you can get started.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not the hoarder-type by any means, however I have been married for 20 years and living in the same house for nearly 5 years. As you know which ever season you find your self in, moving into a house and staying orderly and clear of clutter only happens with intentionality. For me, too much “stuff” is a distraction and reduces my sense of peace and creativity as a designer.
Start in the your closet
So as I leapt into 2017 with an eager outlook, I decided to tackle my closet first. Somehow I was able to tackle a nearly disorganized and disarrayed closet making it into a simplified, reduced, and orderly space. Our home is nearly 20 years old and has such limited closet space (especially when you share!), that I had to make the most of the space.
Just eliminating and reducing extra things in your life brings such a sense of freedom and allows you to breathe a little easier. This was just the first space I tackled. I have plans to tackle a new space every couple of weeks, but that’s not all I’m tackling. I’m hoping to reduce anything in my life that is excess.
My ultimate goal is to downsize our home, creating a simple and elegant lifestyle rather than a vast and highly filled space. I want to say “no” to more things to allow more “yeses” for the right people and things. But starting with my home made the most sense. Here are a few ideas on ways to simplify and reduce your home and life.
I want to say “no” to more things to allow more “yeses” for the right people and things.
- Clean out the obvious. (i.e. garage, closet, bathroom drawers).
- Use creative organization (baskets, bins, etc.)
- Let go and give. (Don’t use? Then give it away!)
- Focus on the right things.
- Say “no” to the excess (i.e. opportunities, things, people, etc.)
- Reset your focus and priorities for what matters most.
